How to Get More Plumbing Jobs in the UK Without a Monthly Advertising Fee

A steady stream of plumbing work usually comes from a combination of recommendations, being easy to find locally and following up on enquiries promptly. You do not have to commit to a costly monthly directory subscription to start improving any of those areas. Here is a practical plan for independent plumbers and small plumbing businesses in the UK.

1. Make it easy for local customers to find you

Keep your business name, contact details, working hours and service area consistent wherever you advertise. If your business is eligible, create or improve your Google Business Profile. Use a genuine business description and accurate service areas rather than trying to appear in towns you cannot reasonably reach.

Add clear descriptions of the work you accept: dripping taps, toilet repairs, replacement radiators, bathroom plumbing or other services you actually provide. Customers searching for a particular problem are more likely to contact a business that explains it clearly.

2. Show examples of real work

A few honest photos of completed jobs can be more useful than a large collection of generic stock images. Ask permission before showing a customer’s property and avoid including identifying details. Explain briefly what the problem was, what work you completed and whether the customer had any access or timing considerations.

3. Ask for reviews and referrals properly

When a customer is happy with the job, ask whether they would leave a genuine review. Keep the request simple and never promise a discount in return for a positive rating. You can also politely tell existing customers which other plumbing jobs you take on so they remember your business when someone asks for a recommendation.

4. Build relationships with nearby businesses

Independent landlords, letting agents, builders and maintenance businesses may need reliable plumbing contacts. Introduce yourself with the areas you cover and the types of work you can take on. Follow up professionally rather than mass-messaging people who have not asked for promotional material.

5. Respond quickly — and qualify the enquiry

Before travelling to quote, find out where the job is, what has happened, whether it is urgent and whether access or parts may be an issue. Where possible, ask for a photo. A short checklist saves time for both sides and helps you avoid taking on jobs outside your service area.

  • State your service area and normal availability clearly.
  • Ask for the postcode area and a short description of the problem.
  • Clarify call-out charges, estimates and what a quoted price includes.
  • Keep a simple record of enquiries, quotes issued and jobs won.

6. Try free profile advertising before committing to paid leads

Client Hive is preparing a UK-wide network of independent tradespeople and local service professionals. Worker Bee registration and business profiles are free, with no joining or monthly membership fee. Customer enquiries are planned to open progressively from spring 2027 as local coverage develops. If a relevant paid lead becomes available, you can choose whether to purchase access at the price shown; buying a lead does not guarantee a job.

If you are building your plumbing business, you can Create a free Worker Bee profile now. You can also read our business profile checklist and how optional lead pricing works.

A note on gas work

Do not advertise or undertake gas work unless you are legally qualified and registered for the work concerned. Plumbing and gas engineering are not interchangeable credentials: describe your capabilities accurately and follow the applicable safety rules.

The useful number to measure

Track the cost of attracting an enquiry, how many enquiries become paying jobs and the average value of a completed job. That tells you far more than the number of likes on a post. Start with a clear free presence, then test paid advertising only when you can measure the return.
